How to Remove Waterproof Mascara

waterproof mascaraWater mascara is probably one of the best inventions when it comes to cosmetics enhancement for the eyes. Mascara will lengthen and add volume to your lashes. Imagine, what is more flirtatious than fluttering your long lashes? Why stop your lash-action at the bar when you can take them running, dancing, or even swimming. Now imagine doing all this without the raccoon eye effect and not having to reapply! That, Ladies, is the magic of waterproof mascara. With every amazing product, there is usually a drawback. And with waterproof mascara is removing them at the end of the day. Here is how to remove waterproof mascara:

Contrary to popular belief, waterproof mascara is not bad for your eyes. Actually, you can get waterproof mascara with SPF effects. The old fashion method of removing waterproof mascara is using baby oil and a cotton ball. However, this method may cause eye damage. The petroleum in the baby oil is damaging to the eyes. Instead, use olive oil. Dab some oil on clean cotton ball and place it over your lashes (eyes closed). Hold it for about 30 seconds to allow the oil to break up the makeup. The lipids in the oil will act as a detergent and dissolve/break up the pigment. Gently wipe your lashes clean. Reclean the area with your daily cleanser. If this is too much work for removing your waterproof mascara, try using a makeup remover cleanser from your local drugstore. These products may have beneficial ingredients such as green tea extract and vitamins.

Whichever of the above method you’ve decided to use, it is important that you do not rub the lashes. Doing so may cause them to fall out. Also, I would not suggest wearing waterproof mascara on a daily basis. It is more difficult to clean and the process may cause you to lose lashes.  And this is not a good thing if it happens too often. Save waterproof mascara for the weekends.Other tips for how to remove waterproof mascara, but have yet to try. If anyone has tried any of the following, please comment.

  1. Hi, great tips! I am going to try out the olive oil method. Waterproof mascara is really hard to remove, even with eye make-up remover.

Is there any particular type of olive oil that I should use?

  4. amsiewong-Thank you for stopping by. From my experience, olive oil with a little baby shampoo is the best waterproof mascara remove. Try it. Add a 1 shampoo: 2 olive oil in a tiny bottle. Then gently apply solution to your lashes via a cotton ball. Allow it to sit for about 30 seconds. comes right off!

  5. I’ve been using this recipe for some time now. It works much better than what’s being sold. Bodytreat, you don’t need anything special. Just plain old olive oil works fine.

  7. Thanks so much! The olive oil works great. Sometimes when I remove the mascara, I have to use toilet paper instead of a cotten ball because I have none.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the mascara without removing your lashes?

  8. I have been using baby wipes for a while. It takes off both my waterproof mascara and waterproof eyeliner in seconds. I don’t know what it is that does it, but it is very effective

  9. Emmalyn – why are you losing lashes? If you’re losing lashes, it means you will need to apply the solution to your lashes for a little longer to allow the lipid base of the oil to break up your makeup. You won’t really need a cotton ball, tissues will work just fine.

Lola- baby wipes are disposable cloths with cleaning agents which can act like the lipids in olive oil. They break up the makeup. Do you have more success with the baby wipes? Is it more afforable?

  11. Mascara X fanatic, You should try mascara that has a comb shape wand. It gets more on and stays put better. I also use baby wipes to clean it.

  12. I use waterproof mascara on the regular bases. I’ve used Ponds cold cream for a while now and it works pretty well on removing waterproof. It removes waterproof like it was any non-waterproof mascara. It can be a bit messy however. I would recommend it.
