The search for a more youthful appearance is at large. How much do you spend on skincare? Personally, I’ve donated a large sum of my paychecks to the latest miracle in a jar that promises to slow down Nature’s effect on my skin. Though, I’ve recently encountered generic versions that can perform against name branded products. I am sure many of you have come across the Walmart brand, Equate, during a browse of the beauty product aisle. Does Equate Night Time Firming Cream Work?Better yet, is Olay’s Night of Olay any more effective to merit an increase (about double ) in price when compared to the generic version?

Equate Night Time Firming Cream is the generic version of  Olay Night of Firming Cream.  (It comes in a pink jar). But do they product similar results/feel? At a glance, both products contain similar, if not almost exactly the same ingredients:

Equate: Water, glycerin, Cetyl Palmitate, Cetyl Alcohol, Cyclomethicone, Stearyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Dimethicone, Carbomer, PEG-100 Stearate, Stearic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Dimethicone Copolyol, DMDM Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl, Butylcarbamate, EDTA, Fragrance, Titanium Dioxide, FD&C Red No. 4.  (I cannot find a photo online. If anyone has access to one, please include link in your comment).

The above may be foreign to many readers, so here’s a quick dictionary:

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide : used for SPF effects by reflecting harmful UV rays.

Glycerin:  This by-product of soap is a humidifying agent and skin moisturizer that absorbs moisture from the air. It also improves the spreadability of products.
Dimethicone:Type of silicone that feels like silk on the skin, even when skin is wet. It is also used for improving the appearance of scars.cetyl palmitate:  is used in the cosmetic industry as a surfactant in shampoos, or as an emollient, emulsifier or thickening agent in the manufacture of skin creams and lotions. It is also employed as a lubricant for nuts and bolts.

Cyclomethicone: is used as a base solvent to blend with fragrance oils and perfume oils. Cyclomethicone is a clear, odorless silicone. It leaves a silky-smooth feel when sprayed on the skin. Ideal for body sprays, lotions creams, bath salts, hair care, linen sprays etc.

Most of the remaining ingredients are used for packaging purposes.
Does Equate Night Time Firming Cream Work? Yes, but so does Olay’s Night Firming Cream. Both Equate and Olay’s products are effective and product similar results. Economically and effectively speaking, it is recommended that users purchase the generic version. It delivers the roughly the same amount of effective agent but is half the cost (price varies with market).

Personal experience: I’ve recently switched from the Night of Olay Firming Cream to Equate’s Night Firming Cream when the later was available a local retailer (Walmart). I’ve noticed similar results when comparing the generic version to Olay’s. I, especially, love the immediate glow upon application that both product gives. After eight hours of sleep, my face still feels moisturized as when I first applied the Equate cram. I even switched to Equate’s daily moisturizer. So Does Equate Night Time Firming Cream Work? I think so.

  1. I will put Equate to the test when my night cream runs out. How long have you been using it?

  2. I think it is foolish to spend so much on a product that a generic product can deliever the same result.

  3. I am surprised by your review. Mainly because the price difference is so big that I would think that the Olay’s product would perform better than the generic. Bravo!

  4. tammy- yes, I was surprised too. So I put it up to the test. You can compare the ingredients yourself to see. Thanks for stopping by.

    RS- I would agree.

Nancy- please let me know how that goes when you decided to switch.

  6. I’ve been brushing my teeth the that recipe for about ten years now. I smoke and my teeth shows it. I got a professional bleaching job back in the early 90s and kept my teeth fairly white by brushing it with baking soda and peroxide since.

  9. carol- I am also very pleased with the Equate brand. Yes, yes, it is a Walmart brand, but so what, right? just as long as it works. Why pay three times the price for the same result if you don’t have to. Please come back.

John M- Thanks for the comment.
John R- Your comment is proof that the above blog entry is true! =) thanks for the comment.

  10. Thanks for your review, I totally agree with you, like any woman I like to care for my beauty and health but that doesn’t mean breaking my budget for commercial brands and not trying the generic one which always cost less than commercial brand (who need our money to pay for their advertisements), I’m using Equate brand in night and day cream now, I got it after my “Oil of Olay” face lotion was over. I like it very well so far, no allergic reaction, burning, sensitivity or any other side effect. I really like their night cream since it keeps my very dry skin moisturized all night (which is great). So yeaahhhhh.. I encourage you to give it a try before judging it for being cheaper in price.

  13. I recently switched from olay to equate, and i must say, both products work well. i don’t notice a big enough difference between the two to justify dishing out the extra 10 – 13 bucks. both are velvety, smell wonderful, and keep my face feeling fresh between applications. many companies will make the two different products (name-brand and generic) in the same factory and package and price something that is pretty much the same completely differently so that they can sell more of it (to non brand aspirational people who want to save and brand seekers who don’t mind spending more). more market share is what it’s all about! hey, fine by me… if you know that secret about manufacturing and advertising, you can save a whole bunch of money!

  16. Patrick- You didn’t explain much about your skin condition, so I will have to be general in my response. From my experiences, over the counter treatments that contain Salicylic Acid works the best for me. Product such as Clearsal (active ingredient: benzoyl peroxide) tends to be a bit drying on my skin. Trying going to a local drug store and look at the ingredient list for products containing salicylic acid and try using product that are made for your skin type. And sadly, some of your skin problem may be genetically driven (and may go away with age). If all else fails, visit a derm. doctor.

  17. mackie- you are very right. It only takes a few minutes to pick up a generic jar and a name-branded jar and compare the ingredients. Look up the active ingredient and compare the quantity in each jar. Often, the generic brand is the better buy because they did not spend so much on marketing like Olay.

  19. I,too, have switched to the generic brand for Olay Regenerist. It is awesome. I first tried the Olay brand while on a cruise last year. The sample was part of our welcome package that was in our cabin. I have been hooked since that time. When visiting a local retail store, I learned that they carried the generic brand for this product so I decided to try it. I have since noticed a lack of age spots and the lines that seem to drive us women crazy. My eyes look younger and so does my skin. I highly recommend that if you are on a budget and want to save $$$ on skin care, try the generic. They are basically the same and it works just as well as the name brand.

  20. I am in my late 27 and I just started using the equate anti-wrinkle night cream. I too compared the two products and found almost identical ingredients. Now I am looking for an eye cream. I have noticed that recently I have been getting crow’s feet, yuck! Can anybody suggest a good one or do you think the anti-wrinkle cream under the eyes is enough? During the day I use Clinique’s dramatically different moisturizing gel, and Bare minerals make-up.
